MEDITATION WORKSHOP

Weekend Retreat at the Edge of a Serene Forest Lake (Pittsburg, PA)

August 18-19, 2012

Meditation practice can help us find peace within ourselves while we develop a strong, yet flexible, mind. In this workshop, you will learn how meditation works and receive practical instructions from the Thai Buddhist monk of Wat Thai,Washington,D.C., for establishing a personal practice.
The program will include the Buddha’s teaching, sitting, standing and walking meditation with instructions, individual interviews, and Yoga practice. Please wear loose comfortable cloths, preferably white to honor the Thai Buddhist tradition. Bring a meditation cushion if you have one.   Lunches are provided by the host (Nina & Friends). For break times, juice, tea, and water will be provided all day. The Schedules are as follows:

Saturday August 18, 2012

8:30 a.m.         Registration.
8:40 a.m.         Morning chanting.
8:45 a.m.         Taking the Five Precepts
9.00 a.m.         Introduction to meditation by Ven. Dr. Thanat Inthisan
9.30 a.m.         Keep practicing moment to moment mindfulness
10:30 a.m.       Meditation (sitting, walking and standing)
11:00 a.m.       Lunch served for the monks
11:15 a.m.       Lunch break for meditation practitioners
12:30 p.m.       Mindfulness with walking, standing meditation.

1.30 p.m.         Sitting meditation with mindfulness.

3.00 p.m.         Sitting, walking meditation.

4.00 p.m.         Dhamma talk and questions & answers.

5.00-5.15 p.m. Tea break

5.15-6.00 pm. Yoga and breathing exercise.

7.00 pm.          Evening chanting

RULES AND DISCIPLINES FOR PARTICIPANTS

 

1. Follow the Five Precepts.

2. There will be no communications between participants except during conversations with the monks. If truly necessary, written messages are allowed. Questions and inquiries for the monks are also done in this manner.

3. Be particularly mindful and observe all your actions: walking, sitting, standing, or lying down.

4. Be considerate about restrooms, and keep them clean.

5. Be modest, and be careful not to criticize others. Examine yourself ninety percent of the time, and examine others ten percent of the time).

6. Participation in ALL scheduled activities is required.

7. There will be no smoking or any substance usage.

8. Eat lunch, with beverages in the afternoon.

9. Be mindful of your speeches and actions, making sure that they will not disturb others.

10. Keep the area clean.

* Please pay attention to the weather forecast. In case of severe weather, participants will be allowed to return home.

 

WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING

 

1. Your personal items

2. Sitting mat or cushion

3. Any other appropriate items for the practice of yoga

  • Male participants must wear white clothing with white pants or a neutral color.
  • Female participants must wear white clothing or a neutral color.

 

Note:

Although the meditation workshop is open to the public free of charge, a donation is always welcome. The Mental detoxification program is suitable for everyone who wants to improve health and metal development. For more information please contact:

The General Secretary of The Council of Thai Bhikkhus in the U.S.A He is the author of several works, including The Buddhist Missionary in the USA (in Thai). He is also an expert in meditation practices and in yoga. His wide range of experiences includes trips to Russia to teach Vipassana meditation, and participation in the last three World Parliament of World Religion conferences. He has been the tour guide for several recent pilgrimages to Buddhist holy sites in Nepal and India.
